This reading program is designed for children who would benefit from a more phonetic-based approach to reading and spelling instruction. It is based on the practices of Susan Barton, which are influenced by Orton-Gillingham’s strategies. Students are screened using the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP2).
Learning Strategies Class provides students assistance with organization, classwork, test preparation, and other essential skills in a small group setting. It also allows students extra time for classroom assignments and assessments. This class takes the place of Spanish course.

Admittance to Learning Strategies Class is a collaborative agreement between teachers and parents. It begins with a referral by teacher or parent based on student academic history, current classroom performance, and possible outside academic diagnosis.
The ACE program serves our gifted students in the academic areas of reading and math. This program begins with students in grades three through five. Because all students learn differently and at different rates, the ACE Program’s goal is to help meet the needs of all students.
ACE will assist teacher instruction and student learning in and outside the classroom. The program will support the differentiation of instruction, helping to enrich the curriculum already being taught in the classroom.
In Middle School, qualified students will be provided an enrichment course called ACE, to meet 6th-8th grade students' needs in reading and language. Selection is based on a combination of classroom performance and consistently scoring in the top 4% in reading and/or language on the MAP test. This course will replace a trimester special class. Students will meet weekly in a small group with the Assistant Principal to participate in a stimulating project-based learning setting.
CKS partners with local agencies to provide speech, language, and occupational therapy for our students on site. These services are provided by certified outside professionals. Referrals for screenings are accepted for all ages, and can be initiated by teachers or parents. If therapy is needed, parents may contract privately to have those services occur here in our building during the school day or after school and into the summer. Having these therapists here allows for collaboration among professionals and a comprehensive approach to skill development that benefits our students.

CKS has implemented the Minds in Motion program for our Pre-K and early primary students. In evaluating the program, we learned that encouraging the physiological development of balance leads children to measurable gains academically, socially, behaviorally, and athletically. The benefits of incorporating Minds in Motion into our preschool grades are echoed in the article, "Why Kids Need to Move, Touch and Experience to Learn," published in KQED News in March, 2015.
Students living in predetermined school districts within Fayette County can qualify for Title 1 tutoring. Fayette County publishes those school districts here. Fayette County provides our school with a list of the students who live in the area and then gives a survey to teachers to determine who needs tutoring in reading or math. Tutoring takes place during the school day.
